5So far, so goodNov 14, 2009
By Kristin Zhivago "Author, Roadmap to Revenue: How to Sell the Way Your Customers Want to Buy"
Great idea. Wasn't sure it would work well. Needed to be able to use a modem in a variety of countries, with a variety of local cards, to avoid the incredibly high data costs that US carriers tend to charge when you're using cellular data services outside the U.S.

The Zoom unit is solid. Nice simple design.

It's a little tricky putting the SIM card into the slot - after you take off the back cover, you have to carefully position it so it will slide under a thin metal band. But you eventually get the hang of it.

Unfortunately the AT&T voice/data card that I use in my smartphone didn't work in the Zoom modem. I couldn't connect with the network. I called Zoom tech support several times. The Zoom tech support people were helpful, but this unit is really new - they admitted that they haven't gotten a lot of calls on it yet. I finally talked to "Dennis," who said that you have to get a "data only" SIM card from AT&T. Unfortunately the reps at AT&T say there is no such thing - that you can only get a data SIM if you also buy a PCMCIA modem. Called tech support back at Zoom and they said you can get one if you go to an AT&T store. I was getting tired of the AT&T runaround, so I checked T-Mobile online.

It turns out T-Mobile has an unlimited data plan for $39.99/month. Went to the local store with my laptop and my Zoom modem, signed up for the plan, and got the SIM card. Didn't have to get a contract, or buy a modem or phone. Plugged the card into the Zoom modem, and plugged the Zoom modem into the laptop. Bingo. It downloaded pages faster than my cable modem - tough to believe, but true.

The Zoom software is nicely designed. It shows you your usage rate, in case you're watching your megabytes. Makes it easy to receive SMS messages - which comes in handy when you're registering on the T-Mobile site, for example. We'll see how this works with local SIM cards in other areas of the world, but so far - thanks to T-Mobile - this is pretty encouraging.

Update, June 2011 - Still chugging along. The T-Mobile plan is now $49 a month, which may or may not be related to ATT buying T-Mobile (sad). In any case, this thing works beautifully with all SIM cards so far, and gives me almost-cable-speed wireless in a variety of settings. The software is elegant and intuitive. One note - when you remove it from your computer with the power on, first disconnect it from the network, then go to the Z icon in the system tray, right-click, and hit "EXIT." THEN you can "remove the hardware" using the remove hardware icon in windows. If you don't do it this way, you can get the blue screen of death due to IRQ interrupt conflicts.

Update, April 2012 - Plugged it into my new Mac, and it refuses to be recognized. The app appeared to install correctly, but it simply doesn't recognize the modem. Will update this if I am able to get it to work...heard back from Zoom customer service. They say they have not tested it on the Mac OS 10.7, so cannot offer me any help. Further research led me to believe that Mac no longer supports modems with 10.7, so I may be out of luck. I just tested it again in a Windows machine; works fine. Very disappointing, since it gave me universal and pretty-decent access even when there was no wifi or the wifi options were not secure. Also disappointing because a lot of the competing modems are all in the one-star category. So buyer beware - the literature says they are compatible with Macs, but if you're running Lion 10.7, it ain't gonna work for you.

Update, April 2012 - Turns out it works with Lion 10.7after all - IF you are running in 32-bit mode instead of 64-bit mode. Works like a charm. All you have to do is to hold down the "3" and "2" keys while booting up your MacBook Air and you will boot up in 32-bit mode; then plug in the Zoom modem and it will be recognized by the system. I won't run in 32-bit mode all the time, but when I'm on the road and need this modem to work, I'm sure it will be fine. A hat tip to EVDOinfo.com, which was where I saw the info about holding down the 3 and 2 keys.

5Best EverNov 08, 2010

This is so far one of my best investment ever. I have been looking for a device that would allow me to access internet in a most economical way. Pay-as-you-go is a type of service I have been looking for. T-Mobile has a pay-as-you-go phone service which also allows you access the internet at only $1.49 a day. I put the same SIM card in my phone to this adaptor and without any trouble to provide an internet connection to my laptop. The speed seems very acceptable. This is way cheapter than if you purchase the day pass at hotel or airport. I am very happy with this device and decide to share this great product with others.

3Does not support 3G on T-MobileJan 16, 2011
By Tom Miller "Tlgalenson"
Yesterday while looking at specifications I discovered that this 3G modem will only support GPRS and GPRS-Edge on the T-Mobile network (about 2.5G). It will run full 3G speeds on the AT&T network (if the network is feeling peppy) and it is (apparently) a better choice for International data use because it supports the 2100 MHZ band. The "Model 4597 3G+ Freedom Modem for AT&T and T-Mobile" is what I should have ordered since it works on both the T-Mobile 1700(AWS) 3G band and the 2 bands bands AT&T uses for 3G (850/1900). The 4597 doesn't include the 2100 band so its apparently less suitable for Europe/International use.

Darn, at least I can return the product un-opened and trade "up" to the one I should have ordered originally...
