5Finally Jawbone gets it right!Jan 27, 2011
By Dr. Sam Beckett "Hoping for that last leap home"
I have used more bluetooth headsets than I can count from a range of manufacturers. Jawbone typically proved the most frustrating: excellent technology, good controls, and brilliant packaging marred by heavy weight, large size, use of proprietary chargers, poor fit, and weak sound. Over time, as the already incredible noise-canceling technology improved, the size and weight decreased, and output volume increased, leading to the small, featherweight Icon. The Icon also saw the first use by Jawbone of the micro-USB standard for mobile device charging. Sadly, the Icon still suffered from an unstable fit and tinny sound.

Enter the Era, and at last, Jawbone has reached perfection (almost). Most on-line reviews will gush over Jawbone's ability to pack a larger, fuller-spectrum speaker into the same-size housing, and it's true: it is louder, and voices sound more natural, now that they have the "warmth" lacking from the Icon. What they don't tell you is that the eartips are much improved. First, there are four of them now, not just three; what was the Icon's largest one, is now the second-largest packed in the Era's box. Interestingly, the second-largest eartip for the Era is also slightly larger than the Icon's largest, leading to - at last! - a stable, secure fit. One that also remains fairly comfortable for extended periods of time.

One will also read much about the built-in accelerometer. While it seems a bit gimicky, I have to admit, the "tap-tap" to answer and end calls is actually pretty slick. I can't wait to see what other control-ability Jawbone will devise for the Era in time.

Which is one more point you don't find in on-line reviews: through Jawbone's MyTalk site, not only do the Voices and DialApps continue from the Icon, but you can now adjust nearly a dozen of the Era's settings there, too. For example, I disabled the "double shake-shake" pairing function (still accessible via the multifunction button), and changed the button-hold behavior from volume adjustment to Noise Assassin dis-/en-abling. Very cool.

There are just two issues, both minor and not nearly worth the loss of 1 star. An extremely minor nit is the eartip design. I don't understand why no one uses the excellent design of the Plantronics Discovery 640 or Jabra EarGels, which fit more easily, naturally, and comfortably, and guarantee the proper pointing of the headset at the user's mouth. The other issue is Jawbone's insistence on including only one stupidly short USB charging cable. Yes, you can use your own USB/micro-USB one, or buy Jawbone's $15 "cable kit" (which includes a 5' cable and an additional 3" one). But given the $130 price tag and the inclusion of an A/C wall charger (aren't most outlets on or near the floor?), why not include the 5' cable as well?

The best headset I ever had to this point was the Jabra JX10, but now it is second-best - by a long shot - to the Jawbone Era. The fun starts with the very cool and eco-friendly box, and goes from there.

PS: My phone is an iPhone 3GS, for those that may be wondering, and both mono and stereo sound work flawlessly

5The real reviewMay 08, 2011
By Jefferson
I am a UPS driver and need the best bluetooth technology available. I have tried 5 other bluetooth models over the last 2 years, most recent being the Jawbone ICON, and my search has culminated to this new piece here, the ERA. The problem with the icon was its subpar volume when playing media, since I stream pandora from my cell phone for many hours a day. The new ERA is substantially louder and of much better quality. I cant put it on its loudest level because its too much, and I never thought I would have this much welcomed problem.

I know the phone touts all this tap tap shake shake stuff, which is neat, but I just use it the regular old fashioned way.

As for call quality, its outstanding. The phone is light and fits snug and comfortably with the jabra ear gel inserts I bought for the ICON but also fit perfect on the ERA. I do not like any of the custom earpieces it comes with.

The reason I wrote the review is because of the conditions I put this thing through. I drive the UPS truck, with an obnoxiously loud diesel engine roaring under my nose, and both doors are open so you can imagine the wind noise, and the ERA handles it like a champ. Its loud and clear on my end, and everyone I call says its sounds good on their end. Its a grand slam!!

5My search is overMay 24, 2011

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3GEH2KHS53HUQ More than a headset that "sounds good for a headset", this sounds good... period. It's easy to use, comes with a good set of well designed accessories, and can either be uses right out of the box or customized to satisfy your inner-geek.

The attached video shows the headset, the included accessories, and provides an audio sample of how the headset sounds to someone at the other end of the call.

More details:

- It works well with my iPhone4 voice commands and voice dialing
- It provides full music control, fast forward, pause, and rewind
- Five hours of talk time and days of standby on a charge
- Charges in under an hour using a standard micro-usb connector to either the supplied charger or a USB port
- A short charging cable is included. (Short is good for portability)
- Pairs easily, literally with a few shakes (that's how you tell it to go to pairing mode, you shake it a few times.
- No problem downloading firmware updates and new voices from the Jawbone MyTalk website

Additional thoughts:

The sound is so good I've started using this headset in the office while listening to audio, either from my iPhone or PC. I'm not tied down by a wire, can still answer calls, and it's harder to get snuck up on with one ear free.

Please feel free to let Amazon and me know if this was helpful to you since it helps me improve my reviews.

1Be careful! No factory warranty if Jawbone product is bought through AmazonNov 02, 2011
By E. Moraine "1silica"
I purchased the Jawbone Era 5 months ago. It worked flawlessly with my iphone4 until about 2 weeks ago when it began to break up and garble my outgoing voice. I thought it was location specific but within days the complaints I got from people I called told me it happens everywhere. I called Jawbone and was walked through a software reset which seems to work for now. Here's where they earn their 2 stars:

I explained that this is not stated in the warranty or on the Amazon website. The customer rep agreed but stuck to his guns: I bought it from an unauthorized seller so the 1 year warranty on my 4 month old product is void. I asked for a list of authorized sellers. The Jawbone rep told me that is internal company information and he can't give it out!

I looked around their website and found a page showing logos of "retail partners" To my amazement there was the secret list of approved sellers and Amazon is not one of them: ergo no factory warranty. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN AFTER 30 DAYS when you buy a jawbone product through any online seller that isn't jawbone.com. This makes it simple for me: I'm not going to buy Jawbone products any more.

5Jawbone EraJan 27, 2011
By Jason *******
I've have every earpiece Aliph has produced and can say that this one is beyond a doubt the best to date. In fact, I wouldn't say I was particularly pleased with any of their previous efforts. I felt they were better than the competition but left a lot lacking. The Era is louder than the Icon and the extra length helps it stay in contact with the cheek where the Icon was a bit short. Obviously everyone has their own fit requirements, but for Aliph earpieces to work well they really need to be in contact with your cheek.

While the earpieces tend to work extremely well for me for a month or two then start having issues, Aliph's support is pretty darn good. They always walk you through the typical troubleshooting steps (reset, repair headset) but when that doesn't resolve your issue they're quick to issue an RMA within the first 12 months and replace the equipment.

My only real complaint is that they don't sell the ear loops individually. It kills me to pay $9.99 + shipping for a fit pack when all I need is a $.20 loop.

Pros:
* Great fit options for once (for my head, anyway!)
* Much better sound
* Best build quality yet
* Finally, a carry case!
* Great support
* A2DP (was supported in the Icon, but not sure about previous models) is very handy.

Cons:
* Price
* Price
* Price
* No Android battery meter (they're way overdue with this!)
* Not crazy about the choices for the 'personalities'
* I find the additional apps they provide useless or annoying (require 3rd party agreements)
* Ear loops not sold individually
