Motorola H17 Bluetooth HeadsetJan 01, 2010
By William Russell
"Outrageous"
OK, first of all, I don't normally do reviews. But I have had bad luck with Bluetooth headsets and this one has impressed me right out of the box.
First of all, any other headset I've worn has caused my outer ear to ache after about 30 minutes of use... no matter how I adusted them. But this one is like not having anything in your ear at all! I bought it today, I've been wearing it for three hours straight now and I've literally forgotten it was in my ear several times. To be clear, there are two options for wearing this product. One involves a plastic loop as shown in the picture. The other, the one I'm using is a soft rubber deal that just holds it from inside your ear. Sounds weird, I know. But it is seriously comfortable.
Now that I've beat that dead horse... As I've said, I've only been using the H17 for a few hours, so take it for what it's worth, but the sound quality seems to be just about the best I've experienced in a headset for under $100. It gets freaking loud! I don't have very good hearing and I had to turn it down at least half way. As a test of the noice cancellation feature, I made a call to my daughter from my garage and spoke to her while wrapping on the trashcans. She said she could barely hear the noise I was making but could hear me just fine.
The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is that the sound quality of the speaker is not quite as good as straight through my phone.
By the way, the fact that it turns on and off via the flip out boom is a really nice feature.

Best bluetooth headset I've ever owned. on/off switch is the best!Jan 05, 2010
By Collin Defreitas Finally! A physical on/off switch! Sooo many times I've answered my phone with my headset in my pocket and having to switch the call back to the handset. The physical on/off switch works great, especially with the rapid connect. Its on and connected to the phone in like 5-8 seconds, really impressive! People say the volume controls are a little small, but they work fine for me. Mute is easy to use and automatically switches off if you switch to another call. Voice battery level notifications are useful as well, no need to decipher LED colors or flashes to figure out if it needs a charge.
Love it! Can't really find anything to complain about.

BEST BLUETOOTH AVAILABLE.Jan 25, 2010

I drive a tractor trailer and they can be very noisy, this unit is the best that I have owned. It is very comfortable, on/ off button, boom and volume controls. It is very small and very lightweight, I highly recommend it, my friends can hear me clearly outside with the wind and they are very clear on my end. Buy this unit and you won't buy another one.

Unbelieveably comfortableJan 02, 2010

I was just about to give up on any bluetooth headset from working for me. I wanted one that I could hear, the caller could hear me without all the background noise and wouldn't hurt my ear - I know way too much to ask for. Well this one fit the bill.
It's unbelieveably comfortable because it doesn't go in the ear, it sits outside the ear. It's so light I forget I have it on. I can hear clearly and adjust the volume easily, callers don't complain about background noise but most importantly it's comfortable - all day comfort. It comes with extra ear hooks and ear rubbers to find your best fit. Only problem so far was my jacket knocked it off my ear and I didn't notice it was out but saw it on the ground.
Battery charges with USB or electric outlet and seems to last 1 to 1 1/2 days, so I recharge every night and no problem. I can't say enough about the comfort of wearing this one all day. I'm just amazed.

Very small & great on/off flip boom; 9 months later it's brokenMar 12, 2010
By Cosmos Mom Previously, I used a Motorola H710 for 2 years before deciding to order a new bluetooth headset and giving the H710 to my husband. Based on the Amazon reviews, I ordered the Plantronics Voyager PRO and tried it for 1 week before returning it to Amazon. The sound quality of the Voyager PRO is excellent compared to the Motorola H710 and the Motorola H17 which I eventually purchased from Amazon. However, I wear glasses and I found that wearing the headset was uncomfortable for me, especially the bulky earpiece.
So after more research on Amazon & CNET, I returned the Voyager PRO to Amazon (great return policy) and I ordered the Motorola H17. The packaging on the Motorola H17 is very bulky and it took two of us to figure out how to open the metal box with a plastic insert. First, at the top of the package, you need to use a screwdriver to turn the plastic screw and then remove this plastic screw. Next, you need to remove the warranty paper glued to the bottom of the box. Then you need to take a screwdriver and push the plastic insert so that it pops out of the metal encasing. It appears that Motorola designed this packaging to make it very difficult for shoplifters to remove the earpiece. Because you basically "destroy" the packaging while opening it, you may have problems returning the H17 to Amazon.
I like the Motorola H17 because it's so small and you can turn the headset on/off by flipping the headset boom, just like the Motorola H710. I don't wear the headset all the time, so it's easy to carry it in my pocket or purse. I also like that you get verbal notifications about the battery level so you know when to charge the battery. The battery charges very quickly. But I wish it had the comfortable earpiece of the H710. The three over-the-ear pieces are very small and not comfortable like the H710. If you wear glasses, it's difficult to find the right position of the earpieces. I'm still trying to figure out which one is best. The two rubber inserts that are supplied don't work for me. I felt like the headset was always going to fall off.
Overall, the sound quality of the H17 is much better than the H710 but not nearly as good as the Voyager PRO. The wearing comfort of the H17 is not as good as the H710 but better than the Voyager PRO. The size of the H17 is as good as the H710 and better than the Voyager PRO. I'm keeping the H17 but only rating it 3 stars because I haven't found my ideal headset yet.
****Update 9 months later (12/27/10): I have to downgrade the rating from 3 stars to 2 stars. After using this headset for almost 9 months the standard earhook broke so I had to use one of the other earhooks that came with the package, which was very uncomfortable. Then the on/off flip boom broke off while I was turning on the headset. I tried gluing it together but that didn't work. In the meantime, while my husband continues to use my old Motorola H710 without a problem, I had a broken headset. I ended up buying a Plantronics Explorer 242C at Costco for $29.99 that has a more comfortable earhook and better sound quality. I don't recommend this Motorola headset at all.
