A disappointmentSep 28, 2009
By P. Tiersma I bought this sim card because it seemed like a good concept and as a National Geographic Society member, I trusted that they had done their homework before putting their name on a product of this sort. Unlike some other reviewers, I read the description and was aware of the call-back feature. In practice, it worked well enough in the UK, but in the Netherlands, it could only receive calls. When I tried to make a call, I received a message: "you are forbidden to make this call." And no callback. I ended up buying a Dutch sim card for 10 euros and it worked fine.
On my return to the US, I went back to the Amazon website and got permission to return the card, hoping to get a partial refund (I obviously did not expect a full refund, since the card worked fine in the UK). I sent it back and now, 2 months later, have not received a refund, nor has the card been returned to me. You would think that if the company felt I was not entitle to a refund, they would at least have the decency to return the card to me, since it must have had at least $30 of credit on it.
The bottom line is that in most situations you are much better off buying local sim cards abroad. Apparently the attractive idea of using a single sim card throughout much of the world is difficult to implement, and in any event this company cannot be trusted to deal honestly with its customers.

Talk Abroad is a 'callback' serviceJun 24, 2009
By D. McCauley From the manual: "The Talk Abroad service is a 'callback' service. This means that in order for you to complete a call, you must dial the destination phone number and then wait for the Talk Abroad network to call you back."
Not what I expected. It would have been helpful had I known that up front.

Does not work in Munich or VeniceAug 06, 2009
By D. Holstege I tried to use this SIM in Venice, but got the message "emergency calls only". In Munich I consistently got zero bars. I was never able to use it, even to send text messages ("service unavailable") while in Europe. Next time I will buy a local SIM when I arrive. My US AT&T SIM used Vodaphone, and consistently had 5 bars.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!Sep 03, 2010
By RMF I purchased this SIM card, because I needed a phone to work in the following 20 countries during an international road trip. UK, France, Belgium, Luxomburg, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungry, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia. The phone was supposed to work in all these countries, many with free incoming calls. We were not able to get a single text message in or out the entire trip, but still got charged the 60 cents each time we tried. The phone only actually functioned well enough to receive or make calls in the UK, Belgium, and turkey. It dit NOT work in any way shape or form in any of the other countries. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS!!!!! There are several better options out there that actually work

did not work in northern italyJun 26, 2009
By Bruce G. Lindsay I was very hopeful that this product would ease me through a number of short trips I am taking in the next year or so. But in Milan, Parma, and Padova I got only "emergency only" service. Since I had tested it out before leaving, I thought I would at least be able to use it in the US. But no, in the Philly airport, I got 5 bar service, but T-mobile, the carrier, seemed to think I needed web service, and kept asking me to create some kind of profile.
