 Best iPhone 4S case in the market!Dec 12, 2011

I am very experienced with all the iPhone Otterbox case designs (the defender series, commuter series, and now the APL4 Commuter series) because I have purchased all three, the first two for my iPhone 4 and then the last for my iPhone 4S. I would definitely have to say the Otterbox APL4 Commuter Series Hybrid Case is the best fitting, most protective, and most practical case for the iPhone 4 and 4S.
The defender series is just too bulky, it takes away from the sleek slim look of the iPhone. My defender series actually broke a few months after purchasing from normal wear and tear, even though that series is supposed to be the best protective.
The first generation of the commuter series was a very good case. It was slimmer, while still being protective, but it didn't fit as well as I would like it to.
Now to the Otterbox APL4 Commuter Series Hybrid Case. It just topped the other otter box cases by far. The case fits perfectly and looks great. It show the slim and sleek look of the iPhone 4 but still protecting it. With the hard plastic outer case it doesn't stick when you try to put it in your pocket or pull it out. With this case you can drop it on pavement without breaking (none from experience). Therefore, I highly suggest iPhone users to buy this case over any others. Don't waste your money on the other cases like I did and go with this one.

Got a new 4s and originally bought the Defender Series Case. While that is a great case, it just wasn't the type for me. The Commuter case is. Still feels like you are holding an iPhone in your hand. All the buttons still work great, and the headphone and charger cover fit and stay snug until you are ready to use it. That was one of the issues that I had with my defender case. The covers wouldn't stay in place all the time and kept coming out. Overall, I highly recommend this case.

Last year when I bought my iPhone 4, I found a nice Griffin Reveal Etch case for it that has been on my phone since. It's got black silicone sides and a carbon-fiber-looking hard back. I liked the hard back to protect my back glass. Over the year+ that I've had the Griffin case, the silicone sides have lost their grip and the case was getting real loose on my phone. So I went looking for a new case, since the Griffin Reveal Etch is no longer available.
My friends all have Otterbox Defenders, and I know it protects the phone but I don't go for the 'commando look' personally, and it's just too big and bulky for me, and I'd never wear my phone on my belt. Last week I bought an Otterbox Commuter for iPhone 4 at Best Buy, and it seemed to be a pretty good compromise. Then I noticed that the camera and flash surround had two small holes for each of those devices, and on my sample the holes in the hard case just didn't line up with my camera lens and flash very well. Not good. So I took it back. Then did some research on Otterbox website and found the newer style with a large oval cutout for the camera/flash. I found one today at the AT&T store.
I'm very happy with this case, though it's overpriced, like all phone cases (wish I'd bought it on Amazon for $14 less). It's supposedly made for the iPhone 4s, but of course the phones are virtually identical and I liked the larger cutout for the camera/flash. Unlike the previous generation of the Commuter, the newer one does not come with a stick-on screen protector (the Economy strikes again.....we get the same product (but less) for the same price). Basically the Commuter has two pieces - a floppy silicone shell that surrounds the phone, and a harder shell that fits snugly over that one. It fits well and looks good.
I have only one complaint with all the Otterbox iPhone covers, and that is the giant hole to reveal/showcase the chrome Apple logo on the back of the phone. I buy and like Apple products, but I do NOT enjoy being a walking advertisement for them. I wish Otterbox would offer a case with just a blank back with no logo cutout. I solved this problem when I bought a set of XtremeMac screen protectors (which are very nice). They come with a nice black glass cleaning cloth, and after I put on the screen protectors, I cut out a hunk of the cloth and sandwiched it between my Otterbox hard case and silicone liner, so that when you look in the 'hole' in the back, you just see a nice black cloth pattern instead of a gaudy logo. Problem solved, and NO visible advertising.
Highly recommend the Otterbox Commuter (I like the price of the Reflex case better, but I liked the hard-surround of the commuter). But if I'd have found a similar case with a carbon-look back and no logo cutout, I'd have bought it. For me, that's the difference between 4 and 5 stars.
Update 11/28 - Thankfully, I did find the Griffin Reveal Etch on Griffin's website, and they've apparently updated it for the 4s. Ordered one and it's now happily on my phone - and covers that loud Apple logo... ;)
Saved the Otterbox as a backup.

Pros:
--Good overall protection. I like that the port at the bottom and the headphone jack is sealed by the silicone case.
--Hard shell doesn't provide very much bulk to the case
--I got mine for free at a ATT store :)
Cons:
--When you combine the hard shell with the silicone case, it creates about 1/8 inch of space between the headphone jack plug and your actual headphone jack. Several pairs of my headphones WILL NOT PLUG IN when this case is assembled. This is a MAJOR FLAW and inconvenience.
--The hard shell exterior is too skippery. It provides no traction when your phone is sitting on a desk or center console/dashboard of your car. I'm surprised Otter Box didn't provide a small bottle of lube to make the back even more slippery.
--silicone case is too floppy for my liking
If you're willing to make these compromises, then it is a good case. If I paid retail price for it, I would be very upset though.

Cute case but a nightmare for girls!Nov 30, 2011

I was really looking forward to receiving this case. It was not available for shipping when I bought it but I was adamant that this was the one I wanted so I patiently waited over a month for the case to become availbale. WLoved the purple color of the case and the fact that the case is both silicone and polycarbonate appealed to me, being as I'm a huge fan of silicone cases. I also liked the fact that this case was less bulky and easier to store in my pocket or purse. I feel like it offers adequate protection without adding unnecessary bulk. I also like that the case doesn't have a clear film in the front and instead just has a standard screen protector. Now on to the problems. The back of the case, where the cutout is for the apple logo is not protected by a clear film, as is the case for the Defender series of cases. This sincerely freaked me out because I am so afraid about anything happening to my phone. I cut out a piece of a screen protector and placed it over the opening. but it would just be so much better if the case already provided such protection. While I like that the case has silicone plugs to cover the base and the audio jack, the one for the audio jack is kind of difficult to lift and once you're done it doesn't nclick into place it just kind of sits there all crooked. Perhaps my biggest grip with this case, and girls, beware, is the fact that the white detailing on the phone is made of silicone. For the Defender cases, the white is polycarbonate and the exterior is silicone. With this case what encases the phone is white silicone, which eans every time you touch it, it gets dirty. I've only had my case for 3 days and it is already grimy. This is especially upsetting because as a girl, every time you hold the phone or hold it up to your ear makeup comes off and stains the case. I find myself constantly cleaning it off throughout the day because I hate that it always looks dirty. This is a real problem for me and I wanted people to know that before purchasing the case. It's a good case, but just be ready for it go getdirty right away. Had I known about this, it would have probably made me think twice about getting this case.
