The best case for the iPhone that I've foundNov 30, 2011
By Rex Kullmann This case is my favorite. This is the revised version that has a larger opening for the camera so that the flash doesn't bounce off the edge of the case and spoil the picture.
This is a one piece case, the silicone and hard shell are molded together. To protect your iPhone, Just press it into the case. It fits snugly and feels secure and solid. The silence switch is a little harder to reach. (For me that's a good thing.) And all the other switches feel pretty much the same. Not nearly as rubbery as you'd think. The front glass is protected by a raised rubber ridge all the way around. The connector opening is nice and large. There is no silly cut out to display the Apple logo on the back of the phone. I think that's a plus, but that's just my opinion.
This case strikes a balance that I like between protection and usability. There are more impenetrable cases out there that have the silicon layer on the outside, gripping your pocket fabric every time you reach for your phone, and rubber plugs you must hold out of the way whenever you plug in the dock connector or headphones. This case makes me feel like it probably won't be a disaster if I fumble and drop my iPhone on the sidewalk, and that's what I was looking for.
One quibble. The case itself scratches fairly easily. You'll need to carry it in another pocket than the one your keys are in.
Update: The case broke. The very thin part of the case above the connector opening is also where you tend to grab the case when picking the phone from your pocket. The shell layer snapped on one end of that very thin cross member, but the silicone is holding it in place. I still like this case, but be aware this is a vulnerable spot, and don't put pressure on it.
Update to the update: I bought another Speck iPhone 4S case. This case came with instructions for removing the phone, asking users to pry the top out first so the rest of the phone can "angle out easily." I guess I'm not the only one to break that very thin piece at the bottom! I would add that you should avoid grabbing that very thin part of the case when plucking the phone from your pocket.
BTW, the new Speck Satin cases are extremely attractive in my opinion. The black case with grey silicone is very handsome indeed! Much more sophisticated looking than the candy shell.

Great case!Dec 05, 2011
By Pwrdesigner I love this case. I admit I was worried the the glossy material would take away from the grip, but it's actually quite the opposite--creates a good grip. I also really enjoy the design, looks great on the phone (white Speck case with purple detail on white iPhone 4s). Most of the time you completely lose the design appeal of an iPhone by placing it within a case, but this one looks fantastic.
Considering quality, some areas where the rubber meats plastic (mainly corners) look like they could have been molded a little bit better, but overall you have to really be looking for it to notice. I don't find the larger camera opening of this re-design to be an issue. Lots of cases have that ridiculous cut-out to display the apple logo anyway, whereas this cut out is actually functional with a purpose. I have an iPhone for its features, and what good is having "extra protection" with my case if it interferes with those features? The case itself is thick enough to keep most things away from the body, and if you have a film on the back of your phone you won't get any scratches anyway.
Overall, I feel like my phone is very well protected without the huge bulk you may expect form a good case, it looks great and has great grip. Way to go, Speck!

Good case, but still has eraser flake problemDec 13, 2011
By hotgrease This Speck case for the iPhone 4S is a good fitting and good looking case. The design is great and it's one of the few cases that doesnt make the iPhone look less appealing. However, there is a problem with the case and that is the outer rubberized edge. It provides great grip when the phone is face down, but after about a month of going in and out of the pocket it has started to wear. Think of it as the eraser to a pencil. It flakes and rubs off like that. It's not a huge deal, but it does tend to show wear more than it should. The case also has a convex shape to the back, allowing you to push the center in a bit as if it isn't flush with the back of the phone. Again, not a huge deal, but I constantly find myself pushing it in as if it will go away if I push it in enough.. Also get a light color so the scratches you will inevitably get on the back of the case won't show as much. Good case, but can only give it 4 stars.

Good protection but design not as good as the original design for the iPhone 4Dec 01, 2011
By L. Ruben I've been using the original Speck Candyshell case for my iPhone 4 for a year. When a little piece broke off near where the adapter plugs in, it left a sharp edge so I bought this new case which works for the iPhone 4 & 4S. I am not a fan at all. The outer edges of the case (the ones that rest against your hand) are much sharper than the original case. The size of the cut-out for the camera is also a lot bigger, exposing my phone to more potential damage from things in my purse and pockets. I understand this was done due to flash issues with the original design but I have taken at least 500 pics with my iPhone 4 and haven't noticed any flash issues with the old case. If you have an iPhone 4 and are considering a Speck Candyshell, try to find the old style online. You can't beat them for protection, they really are amazing little covers. If you are considering this case for an iPhone 4S, go to the AT&T store and check it out in person before you buy online.

Speck case via Amazon Mktplc was counterfeitApr 17, 2012

We bought the Speck Candyshell case for Iphone 4 through the Amazon Marketplace. We had to mail the case to Speck for warranty replacement when the plastic broke near the charger plug and the rubber around the edge of the case started to come off too. Speck emailed us that the case is in fact counterfeit and they cannot replace it. Amazon was very easy to work with and refunded our money to us. However, it is disappointing to learn that counterfeit items are being sold via the Amazon Marketplace from XYZ Wholesale Corp which have identical packaging and an identical look to the real product. Speck was nice enough to give us 20% off a case from their website though.
