I bought this for my iPhone 4 and thought it was broken because initially it wouldn't charge the phone. I then realized that the protruding black plastic part of the connector was slightly too large and was preventing the connector from going in all the way into the phone's slot. I filed the plastic piece down and around to make it smaller and now it works perfectly. Great deal!

In March I took one trip from Ohio to Florida and the charger worked as advertised. A month later I tried to use it for another trip but it was completely dead...would not hold a charge. I charged it for several hours the morning of the trip but when I needed it about four hours later, it had no juice at all. So the thing worked a grand total of once. Now it's useless. Well, I guess I can use it as a paper weight.

I was at a trade show in Chicago, and I knew that 1. I would be using the phone a lot, and 2. I would not be back to the hotel early. Sure enough, around 3:00 in the afternoon, my iPhone showed low battery. I pulled the back up charger out of my pocket and plugged it in. It gavr my phone a nearly complete charge, and I was good to go for the rest of the evening!

This external battery keeps the iPhone 3, 3GS, and 4 going. My wife and I each have one, and we use it in several different ways. I keep one unit in my attache. When I am on business trips, and using the iPhone heavily, I can plug the external battery into the iPhone towards the end of the day. On weekends, I mount my iPhone onto my bicycle, mount the external battery near the water bottle, and run an appropriate cable from the battery to the iPhone. Apps like iMapMyRide then run for 4 to 6 hours, with full screen display and GPS tracking, with no problem. My wife uses a different approach. She recharges the iPhone from the external battery while it is in her purse. That way, she has maximum access time to the games on her iPhone.
Pluses:
+ Light weight
+ "Full" light confirms when the external battery is fully recharged
+ Adds hours of additional run time to the iPhone
+ Very reasonable cost
Minuses:
- Mechanically awkward. Not great for use while walking around, making phone calls
- Mechanically weak. There is no support mechanism between the battery and the iPhone
- Recharge time of the external battery through a laptop USB port is over one hour
When we are away from AC power for extended periods of time, this device is a life saver.

UPDATE: Stopped working completely after only full charge cycle. Don't know if this was due to an iOS update, or what. Does not work with iPhone 4, jailbroken or not, nothing! The lights still work, and it shows a full charge but the iPhone does not charge! Piece of junk really.

works well with iphone 4, jailbroken and non. does not work with jailbroken iphone 3GS. don't know if it works with non-jailbroken iphone3GS. gives iphone 4 about a 70% charge from zero with phone left on. plug extends a good way out which works with many cases but not all, depends on how large case opening for plug is. super easy to use, and arrived super fast.
