Just in caseApr 07, 2012
By ruffyy I bought this item just in case and when it arrived it was like new. I know we are all clamoring for 4G performance but right now most folks have 3G and it has become somewhat of a standard. So when disaster strikes I will have a way to keep up on the news and keep in touch. Buy from this seller. They sell some good, stuff.

Works better that hoped... sort of...May 05, 2012
By conis I did some homework on this one.
I was looking for an inexpensive way to internet connect, for email- local weather etc, in a rural area of Michigan. Verizon is the only show in town and cell reception is marginal on a good day, in my location. Forget 4g anytime in this century where I am at. I DID NOT pay $269 to verizon for this item. I am using this on a pay as you go basis, as needed.
If it is unlikely you will get 4G data anytime soon, then go with this. It is simpler and more efficient pulling 3G. You can always upgrade to a new device later.
This "fivespot" is NOS. It lacked a couple items normally supplied but was unused. I pulled the instruction manual from the Verizon website and further info from the support pages. Authorization and set up took a couple hours but generally went without a snag.
I read several comments re the device ID # which is supposed to be on the box, quick start info or sticker on the device. Found none of the above. The ID # can be found on a sticker in the battery compartment. Use DECIMAL, 18 digit number.. You need this # to set up and authorize the device.
I am not into downloading video. This device is plenty fast enough for web, email and skype-phone. Tested all of them. Pay as you go data plans are pricy so you will want to be conservative in use. $50/mo for 1gb? Yup. But I will use half of that maybe, in a month, for essential usage. There are other tips here, to set up your PC or ipad so it isn't needlessly refreshing and downloading stuff on a timer. I am not getting into this. The Fivespot will time out and go to sleep mode after 10 minutes of idle, for obvious reasons.
There is one major catch here. This device is only as fast as the 3G signal it is receiving... If you are in a marginal cell reception area this wont work well... if at all.......... UNLESS.
To get any service, I have had to keep my dinosaur Motorola cell phone tethered to an outdoor antenna on the roof. Then 1-2 bars maybe. Nada indoors without the antenna.
I invested in a "Wilson Sleek" cell amplifier/repeater (Around $80) knowing what I was up against. Unbelieveable piece of equipment! From no service or 1 bar and dropped calls, to 4-5 bars. The Fivespot would NOT work without the Wilson amp and to set it up, it has to be 3G connected to Verizon. So keep this in mind. The Fivespot is only as good as the 3G signal it can send or receive. If you are in the sticks, it will need a little booster-upper help. In better covered areas, it will likely perform stand alone.
I am almost always using my iPad>wifi> Fivespot. Once it is initially connected, it remembers the network and pwd so no messy log in ritual.
I may update this after I get some milage on it. First use? I am impressed and it is doing what it is supposed to. And I don't have a lot tied up in this equipment. It is cheaper than $4.00 gallon gas to drive into town for wifi, every day. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ UPDATE~ I have used this mifi-wifi modem for a couple weeks and couldn't be happier with it. I am using this on an island in Lake Huron nine miles off shore (source of 3G cell). The secret is to use a Wilson Sleek cell amplifier plus a high gain Wilson Trucker cell antenna outside (also available on Amazon). Using this combination, I am getting a solid 95% signal strength and 3G lock with download speed approaching 3Mbs, as fast as my DSL at home. Once it locks up, good to go and can use my iPad in quite a radius from the fivespot.
I went with prepaid 1Gb/ $50 month plan from Verizon. I was a little concerned I might use this data up in a hurry but... Turned off all push/fetch options and auto email check etc. So far have used only 15% of 1gb in 10 days use, just by being conservative skipping youtube and other data heavy sites etc. Email and average web site use will not consume a Gb per month. $80 will buy you 5Gb/mo if you feel you need that much.
Overall, this set up has proved a perfect solution to a long standing predicament: Reasonably fast and dependable 'net in a remote fringe reception area. Good to go, now!
